A major fire broke out at the BPCL refinery, hydrocracker unit located in Chembur on August 8. It is believed that hissing gas leak alerted the workers to pending danger while local media says that the fire started due to a blast in the compressor shed of the hydrocracker unit.
Almost 40 people were injured in the aftermath and shockwaves shattered windows and dislodged machinery with a fierce force. Around 8 units from the local fire brigade were able to contain the fire over a period of 4 hour.
