Converting Existing PowerPoint Training Slides Into Highly Engaging eLearning Programs

Converting Existing PowerPoint Training Slides Into Highly Engaging eLearning Programs

Business Case

A global telecom giant, with a significant presence in India, wanted to convert their existing training programs into engaging eLearning modules. While technologically, they were a strong unit, they were unable to convert their traditionally built training curriculum into digital formats. The HSE team of the customer intended to convert their existing PowerPoint slide based training programs into eLearning courses.

The customer had an in-built Learning Management System (LMS). However, they were quite challenged to convert their traditional PPTs into a viable training module that made the training engaging and compelling enough.

A key requirement of the customer was to ensure that the safety messages contained in the PPT slides were accurately represented in the training modules.

Approach

The customer had already worked with ASK-EHS for building for building their digital safety assets through animated movies. They approached us with their requirement and asked us to come up with a solution that would evoke strong and productive responses from their users.

Some of the safety movies that were developed for them, were getting effective results. There was sharp reduction in incidents due to the use of these customized movies in their training deliveries. This seeded the thought in their minds that the same movies could be used for effective digital learning as well.

Understanding the Challenges

ASK-EHS knew the issues that the customer was facing in their training goals. We offered to develop a customized eLearning training module that could be easily deployed in their existing LMS.

The solution had to be simple, yet effective – use their prevalent PPTs and merge the developed movies within the training programs.

A discovery workshop was conducted to understand the customer’s requirements. During the workshop, some pertinent challenges emerged like;

  • Audiences were mostly contractor work forces
  • These individuals were largely technicians who would be working on heights (roughly between 2 and 8 meters)
  • A few incidents had happened that were a cause for concern. None of these had been lethal but the potential risk was pretty high
  • Training programs had not been effective considering the geographical diversity of the audiences and their literacy levels
  • There was a dire need to standardize safety protocols in a manner that individuals from any geography / region would be able to absorb the message and bring about necessary changes in behavior

Meeting the Challenges

ASK-EHS went to work with the graphics and eLearning team to custom develop the training programs that were built in cohesion with the customer’s HSE team. The development of highly graphical and customized eLearning programs was initiated. These programs incorporated the standard protocols that users had to follow, in a fluid yet impactful manner. Here are some of the elements that were incorporated in the training program;

  • A healthy dose of 2D and 3D animated clips were developed and included in the programs, thereby, breaking all language and cultural barriers
  • The existing safety (3D) animated movies were also included at appropriate junctures to make the training program impactful
  • Hypothetical incident cases were added to the program with the intention that everyone would be able to get the gravity of the message
  • Standards were translated into graphical representations for effect
  • Course duration spanned 30 to 40 minutes
  • Courses were provided in local languages as well
  • All custom developed programs were delivered in SCORM compliant packages that could be seamlessly deployed on customer’s LMS

These training modules continue to run on customer’s LMS even today.

User Benefits

The customer sought us out to provide a viable and communicable solution for training their contractors. The product that was delivered met all their expectations and more. The customer was now able to straight away share the training programs to their contractors through digital media. The customer was also able to collect accurate assessments as well. This allowed the customer to proactively train individuals and contribute in reducing incidents.

The contractors on the other hand were happy in the knowledge that they were being trained in right earnest, before doing any job/assignment. This helped them to amp their own training as well and ensure that they followed safety protocols to the ‘T’. Because the training was provided graphically, it was easy for them to sensitize their people on safety and ultimately, complete their assignments safely.
